Still Walking

I almost didn’t go for my walk today. That inner voice was trying to talk. me out of it.

“You are tired.”

“Just walk a few rounds and go home.”

I had scored some points today when I had my green salad with tuna for lunch. There was no way I was going to allow that ‘inner voice’ to put me off walking. I changed into my comfy walking clothes and walked to the indoor track.

“I am going to walk just ten rounds today,” I whispered to myself.

As I plugged in my music, I entered another realm. I knew I could exceed the ten rounds. I kept walking and sometimes geared towards a faster pace, especially with the rhythmic music, I was now walking with a bit of a sway.

Before I knew it I was on my 12th round, I had three more to go and I was not even exhausted. My feet were burning a bit, but I chose to ignore it.

A student joined the walk, walking the opposite way. We would pass each other and share a closed-mouth smile. I left her doing her rounds but I was so proud of ‘me’ because I have achieved another week’s goal.

  1. I saw you and shouted but you were absolutely locked in. ;0 Love that you’re documenting this inner conversation – giving yourself a gift both emotionally and physically. Keep going!

  2. Wahoo! It helps to just do it, and see what happens. (I sort of look at tackling this March writing-every-day thing exactly like that. Nike wasn’t wrong when it coined the phrase, “Just do it!”

  3. Good for you! The inner voice can be so strong at times. I love to walk when it is leisurely, but the minute I focus on fitness or goals, I feel burdened. I love how music and a student on the track helped speed your day!

  5. Way to push through! That surpassing the goal feeling probably felt better than not walking would have.

  6. Way to go! I liked your description of entering that different “realm” where you locked in to your rounds.

  7. Honestly, getting started (read: out of the house) is the hardest part.
