We Write

Walking up the stairs, different feelings flowed. The anxious, the not-so sure and the joyful.

After school on Friday they walked up four flights of stairs. This was the first day of our journaling club. A question I overheard was,

“How can we write for an hour?” I pretended I had not heard that.

This was the day our new journals were shared. I purposely chose a big journal with wide lines for each of the students. The first activity was to write to our diary about how we hoped to use it.

After several writing prompts our hour was up, none of the students moved, they were very engaged writing, drawing, illustrating, coloring and sticking.

I had a smile planted on my face as I looked around and saw my ten upper elementary students still engrossed in their journals. I knew then that, this was going to be a journey my writers would enjoy.

  1. A Friday journaling club- sign me up! I like how you showed through dialogue snippets and actions (writers still all seated) the contrast and the power of writing time. Well done!

I have thought about starting a journaling club since we began ours in Teach Write. I really do think kids crave this kind of writing and not “school” wrting. I’ll be anxious to see where you take this.

  3. I love this! I can tell that they feel the power of “owning” their journals and their voices. Choice is everything! Have fun with this journey.

About Me

I am an Elementary school teacher , I taught at an International IB School in Accra, Ghana. I am now teaching in Hanoi. Writing is my passion and I try to write daily, at least in my sentence a day journal, to capture all the blessings around me.
