Fascinators

A prompt from Teach Write for March.

It is fashionable to wear fascinators to weddings, funerals and planned gatherings that call for fascinators as part of the outfit. We select the best one, colour, height that matches our outfit or physique.

At weddings, (where I live) in particular, when the sun goes down, I see ladies stroll to the Ladies to take off their hats or fascinators. Some rebels, slyly sit quietly and pretend their fascinators are a set part of their outfit.

There are many reasons why I stick with my fascinator throughout events. it is because I may not wear it again in a very long time and my kinky hair quietly unkempt under the fascinator, may need some TLC before I can rejoin the wedding reception.

Most people do not want to be the odd ones out. I have felt that way a few times, donning my fascinator even after sun down. I have not researched the reason hats and fascinators retreat at sun down. This may be the time to do so, in order to do what is accepted at the wedding I have been invited to next month.

Nobody in my circle of friends seems to know the exact answer to this supposed societal norm.

  1. I love looking at peoples’ fascinators, but have never worn one. I look awful in hats of any type. Hmm, you have me wondering if they are common in the Philippines, as my son will be married there next year…

  3. I didn’t know that tradition about fascinators. I find some to look great and some to look absurd. I agree with your reasons for keeping one on and think you should wear it as long as possible!
