Words are Gifts

We Write

My 8.30- 9.00am, slice of my day:

Hours of planning
the lesson begins
dong for attention
Shrill voice calls out

Many twists to unravel
my story, their model
our pencils sharpened Write in a few minutes

My example, their guide
a show of eagerness
Heightened by choice
we use our expertise

Plan with delight
free choice delivers heart maps hold our collection

Planning takes time
Sets us up for success
Ideas are in tufts
So we can expand
the writers we are

  2. Your poem shows the power of teacher as writer…so important that we model the work that kids will also do.

  4. You painted such a vivid image of the writing scene in your classroom! I felt like I was there. Your class is lucky to have a writing teacher who’s also a writer. 🙂

  5. The use of the word ‘tufts’ is so perfect here, especially when I imagine young writers delving into their imaginations. I hope you write with them! This is a fantasic mentor text.

You have wonderfully wrapped up teaching writing in a poem. I, too, like line “Ideas are in tuft.” Perfect word choice.

  8. Oh I get a thrill seeing heart maps used with writers. They are the absolute best, or at least one of the ways to tap into writing passions. Georgia Heard, yes? Or is it Atwell? They are both full of inspiration! Love the poem it brought you.

About Me

I am an Elementary school teacher , I taught at an International IB School in Accra, Ghana. I am now teaching in Hanoi. Writing is my passion and I try to write daily, at least in my sentence a day journal, to capture all the blessings around me. I write with groups of writers, such as Teach Write and sometimes Ethical ELA. I also encourage my friends to write , so I created a platform to make that possible -Writing Run.
