Words are Gifts

Halves, Thirds, Fourths

9.00 -9.30am, slice of my day.

It’s time for Math.

Our fractions unit has been a joy to teach. This approach, new to me just does so much for the students, extending their knowledge in so many different ways. Their observations grow wildly when you don’t hand them all the skills on a platter , on day one. We wait and drop what they need a little at a time. This reminds me of unwrapping a present. Eventually, you see what is in it. As a teacher of many years and different grades, I have never taught fractions in this way, but my experience reveals so much about where we are going with it.

In the past, I would start with that pizza and label it. Not giving students time to think or grow their idea of what fractions are. Now we teach it in many ways through number lines, tape diagrams and more . The vocabulary we use to teach is also powerful when you hear the young’uns using the words so freely.

“Ms. Juliette, I have partitioned the whole equally and located and marked the fraction.”

“These two fractions are equivalent because the are located at the same tick mark.”

Success comes with patience and acceptance. I’m grateful for new exposures, sometimes challenging but we persevere.

  1. I like your analogy of handing students skills on a platter– it happens so often, and the slow reveal is so much more effective!

  2. I agree with Melanie- that line struck me. Your slice, like your Math lesson, is stoking my curiosity. What did you do each day to reap such vocab-rich language from your students?
