The Stories We Share

11.30am – 12.00am, slice of my day

I spent the break from my meeting, coming to class to read the mini stories written by my students. They were out rehearsing for their music concert. Wednesday mornings are when we write our ‘What’s the News?’, brief illustrated stories about anything we want to share. It is a real community builder. I know most of the students look forward to writing their mini-stories and reading others’ when they are posted on the wall.

I chose to write a Shadorma which I learned about for the first time from A Reading Life. A six line poetic form with syllables in this order 3/5/3/3/7/5.

Wednesday's share                                                                                                 Brimming with delight                                                                                                        Ups and downs                                                                                                                     Yays and nays                                                                                                                          Our emotions on paper                                                                                                  Great stories to keep

    Juliette, I love your poem. Thanks for introducing me to the Shadorma. I like “Our emotions on paper / Great stories to keep” The students’ “What’s the News?” sounds like our sharing Slices of Life. I thought of us when I read your poem for the second time.

    I love this idea of having kids write a weekly “What’s the news?” I do a similar thing orally with my students, but may need to borrow your idea of having kids write and illustrate what they share. I enjoyed your poem as well–“brimming with delight” indeed!
