Words are Gifts

The Couple

She runs free

An unhitched bird

Gently leaps

Towards the wind

Her delicate gown floats

While they sway downstream

Beaming to each other, till

she snatches his wing

blocking the sun rays

whilst they claim

the beauty of the sky

This is an attempt at a Golden Shovel using a stanza of Maya Angelou’s poem – Caged Bird .

This poem is to celebrate a beautiful couple whose wedding was held this weekend. The groom is my son’s room mate. They had a colorful traditional ceremony which was entertaining.

Of course the young bride was elated, full of energy whilst the groom a composed young man stood tall. Their family like peacocks were extremely proud of the union. Those of us on social media are cheering them on. This is to celebrating new beginnings.

  1. I tend to think about writing a poem as a gift to give at an event, like a wedding. You instead, experienced the lovely event and masterfully wrote this lovely poem! Thanks for sharing!

  4. Your poem is a lovely tribute to this young couple and something they’ll treasure forever. Thank you for reminding me of “Caged Bird,” a poem I often shared w/ students. I’m reminded of one young man who loved the poem and effused about it a long time.

  5. I hope you share this wonderful image of the couple with them. “She snatches his wing” while they catch “the beauty of the sky.” This is just lovely
