Words are Gifts

Searching

I don’t know how

many a flower is given to

the people who find

I’m drowning in my

sorrows and my soul

whenever we exert a

feeling, we are on our way home

This Golden Shovel is taken from a line in Maya Angelou's (1926-2014) poem Alone.

Thank you Denise and the blogs that inspired you, to write the poignant poem you posted yesterday. I chose to have a go at the same form, Golden Shovel and share my take on what poetry means to me.

Poetry allows us to share the deep emotions and show not tell or tell not show. We rely on the weight of the words to spew the power we expect it to emanate, with differing interpretations.

Poetry tells, shouts and says. The lines can be hidden behind figurative language or be as clear as the sky.

  1. Oh, Juliette, this is gorgeous. “…who find I’m drowning in my sorrows” and this shows the power of writing poetry. You have touched me:

    whenever we exert a

feeling, we are on our way home

  2. Beautiful, and I also loved your analysis afterward! A golden shovel always looks so hard, you made it sing!

I admire how well your words flow into Maya’s.

I’ve seen many great examples of volden shovels at Ethical ELA, but have not yet managed to create one. You’ve inspired me to try again.

i love your words about the power of poetry.
