Silence

“When the soul lies down in that grass
the world is too full to talk about.”
― Rumi

“Never miss a good chance to shut up.”
― Will Rogers

I found many quotes about silence, some of them contradicting what I was thinking about. The two posted above resonated with me.

When I was younger I remember I talked more than I listened, especially when I was around people I was comfortable with. Now, I tend to listen more and really think about what I am hearing a lot more before speaking. I am not where I want to be yet, but I continue to work on it.

I like the way my writing these days is helping me become more introspective. Is it coming with age or experience? It may also be because I have the time to be more reflective.

  1. You’ve always been an excellent listener. And I agree with you about writing as a way to step back and be aware of where we’re at. Thanks as always for setting an example for the rest of us, I’m going to work on listening more intently too. ;0

  2. We’ve walked in the same shoes, I’m working hard on being a better listener, but I have a long path to walk. Writing does allow me to reflect on my journey. 🙂

  3. that is one of my favorite things about writing- it makes you think. I love that Will Roger’s quote and I should take it to heart.

  4. I love that Will Rogers’s quote too. I too wish I had learned the art of silence when I was younger. Now I am mostly practiced in pausing and considering before I speak. It’s a good reminder to also be sure I’m listening more than I talk!

  5. I can relate to your slice. I do think that as we age, we become less talkative and more able to focus on what others say. Additionally, writing regular helps me to consider my own thoughts and reflect upon them. I don’t feel the need to share as much with others. I enjoyed this post and the wonderful quotes.

  6. Love this introspective piece on silence. Given that my nickname as a kid was Big Mouth, I love this reminder to pause and listen.
