Semi-Kaftan

Using the writing prompt from Teach Write for 17th March- “What I’m wearing now” I wrote this:

I have on my after church, relaxing at home dress. Since it is 90 degrees Fahrenheit or 32 degrees Celsius, I am sitting under a whirling fan, indoors but still spotting spots of sweat.

So my dress, a light cotton, denim looking dress, bought the fabric a few years ago and had a colleague sew it for me.

A straight dress that reaches my knee. When I stand it looks like a mini-Kaftan as the sleeves look as if they are holes in the side seams. Therefore the extra cloth flaps at the sides, as the side seam makes the fit of the dress a little fitted.

The fan is making its own music, whir and banging sounds, in rhythm. I choose to ignore it as I am enjoying the air its stirring.

So with the extra supply of air, the thinness of the fabric gives comfort for the season (dry season).

  1. This was a great prompt for you, because you took time to consider word choice and sensory details as you sliced about a simple topic.

  2. I like the way you use adjacent words to show different parts of speech, like spotting (verb) spots (noun) of sweat and makes the fit (n) fitted (adj). I can see the dress and feel the heated breeze.

  4. The dress serves and a way of bringing us into your home and your life. What a nice prompt and piece. I especially can imagine ignoring the sounds of the fan because you need the air and its not broken yet!

  5. I appreciate the way you use the details of how you are dressed to convey details about where you are. Through your description we learn that it is hot; it’s the dry season. You draw connections to a cultural kind of clothing, the kaftan. It’s fascinating to think about how much more information is shared based on how you are dressed.

  7. What a wonderful idea for a prompt. I can visualize your light cotton comfortable dress. It’s the simple things in life that make us happy. (I’m going to borrow this idea for a slice so thank you!)
