A Time to Read

An idea Heather used from Sherri.

10.30am – 11.00am, slice of my day

When the students return from recess, it’s time for our quiet mindfulness video…

When the three minute video is over it is time for the short mini lesson…

When the mini-lesson is over students have a chance to choose their reading goal… or is there a whole class focus?

When they settle down with their ‘3 o’clock partner’ they have the rest of the time to read…

When they are busily reading I get to sit with individual students for a short chat…

When the time is over they have a short response… and a time to share…

  1. I wish I could hang out for this slice in your classroom! Time to read, respond, and share – what could be better?

  2. What a wonderful routine you have set with your students for pausing, thinking, and reading. I love the use of ellipsis in this slice.

  5. SUCH a clear post about the magic of that reading time that clearly shapes your classroom. Sounds like a magical place.

  6. Reading time is the best! I was just talking to a colleague about the importance of reading time and how I have let that slip away this year. This format worked well for this slice of your morning.

  7. Juliet, thanks for the overview of this lesson time. What a lot you get done! What a great way to do reading. I always loved conference time with students. And I remember clock partners, too. That is a great way to partner students up.

About Me

I am an Elementary school teacher , I taught at an International IB School in Accra, Ghana. I am now teaching in Hanoi. Writing is my passion and I try to write daily, at least in my sentence a day journal, to capture all the blessings around me. I write with groups of writers, such as Teach Write and sometimes Ethical ELA. I also encourage my friends to write , so I created a platform to make that possible -Writing Run.
