Pineapples

Even though some fruits like pineapples and bananas are ever present, other fruits are seasonal.

People claim the spiky skin of the pineapple is medicinal. You can imagine the various concoctions that appeared during the pandemic. Pineapples are the perfect fruit for many reasons. They are sweet and have roughage so are champions when it comes to smoothie making.

I recently served my guests with a fresh, homemade pineapple smoothy laced with ginger. That was so refreshing, as I made sure it was cool.I prefer my pineapple and ginger smoothie, with all it’s roughage, even though I make sure I blend it till it is as smooth as it can get. Most people would like to sieve it and have it as light as tea.

The thin circular slices of pineapples are also very juicy and can actually quench one’s thirst, keeping you cool on a hot afternoon, here in the 85 degree Fahrenheit heat.

  1. The Smoothy sounds perfect — I did wonder how the taste differs with the roughage includes …. I imagine it a bit thicker and earthier

  3. If you’ve never had tepache, I highly recommend it! We tried making some this summer. It’s one of my new favorite things to do with pineapple apart from roasting it on the kabob.

  4. Juliette, you have taken a perfect example of the mundane and elevating it to a Slice. I love “ . . . smoothly laced with ginger.”
I noticed that you chose to state temperature in Fahrenheit. I thought Ghana, like Canada, uses the metric system. I was wondering how consistent the use of Metric is in Ghana. In Canada, grocery stores post signage in both metric AND imperial, and when asking someone’s height they often respond in feet. Our temperature however is consistently stated in centigrade. (In Vancouver, right now at 7 am it is 1 degree Celsius)

    1. Yes, I worked on “making the mundane important.” Yes, in Ghana we use the metric system but I felt most of my readers would be used to hearing the temperature in Fahrenheit, so google helped me with the conversion.
