Revealing Sentences

Do you have a sentence a day journal? I’m wondering if I am doing this right. Mine is a tiny, old diary that lives beside my bed. Before I nod off every night I recall my day and write down the first thing about the day that comes to me. Sometimes I wonder if that is enough, as it does not capture my whole day. Here are my sentences from the last five days:

Tuesday 5th: We shared Ghanaian culture with the whole school-Lion Day.

Wednesday 6th: Rested, but was still bombarded with a long to-do list.

Thursday 7th: Back to school, the beat goes on.

Friday 8th: Busy day, my after school activity was engaging, students spent the time on writing their memories.

Saturday 9th:The funeral was very well organized, we were serenaded by the orchestra.

Sunday 10th: So glad the children chose to take two of Rona and Bailey’s puupies.

Monday 11th: Just heard my boys contacted all their aunties ‘mothers” on the British mother’s day.

I believe one of the benefits of this collection is that I am able to extend or elaborate on these mini statements and choose to write slices about some of these.

  1. I love this idea! Writing one sentence feels completely manageable, even when exhausted, and taken together over a week gives a brief picture that will, of course, lead to longer writing. I’m going to give this a try! Thanks for this Slice, Juliette.

  2. I am on year 14 of doing a “line a day” journal and the journals are one of my most prized possessions. It is amazing to see patterns year after year! You’re definitely doing it right especially because you can infer many things from the way you said “long to-do list”, “funeral” “rested”. It can capture your feelings of those weeks/days in a way I didn’t expect! Enjoy and thanks for sharing!

  5. Sounds as though the sentence a day is working for you, which tells me you’re doing it right. Like all writing, it’s a personal journey, and you get to decide the route.

  6. Thanks for sharing this. You can tell so much from you one sentences. I use to do this when I found I could not write in my personal journal. I told myself I just needed to write one sentence each day. It was not long before I realized I couldn’t stay to one sentence. I do go back to it when I get stuck. Thanks for the reminder.

  7. There are so many stories in these small snippets that sound so interesting. I have one of these journals, but can’t seem to stay consistent with it. Thanks for the inspiration to pick it up again.
